Prospective Educator Scholarships

The PDK Educational Foundation awards more than 30 scholarships each year to prospective educators who have a connection to PDK by having a family member or teacher who is a PDK member or through membership in the Future Educators Association.

Eligibility

Individuals who meet one of the following criteria may apply directly to PDK International through the online application:

  • High school senior intending to major in education who is a member of a Future Educators Association® chapter in good standing
  • High school senior intending to major in education who is the child or grandchild of a Kappan in good standing
  • High school senior intending to major in education who has one of his/her reference letters written by a Kappan in good standing
  • An undergraduate member of an FEA or PDK chapter who is enrolled in a college education program

The deadline for submitting an application for a 2012 Prospective Educator Scholarship was April 1, 2012.

Endowed General Scholarships

In addition to the endowed scholarships listed below, each year the PDK Educational Foundation offers fifteen $1,000 general scholarships for prospective educators.

  • Meissner Endowed Scholarship

  • Wilmer and Sal Bugher Endowed Scholarship

  • Pauline B. Gough Memorial Scholarship
  • Katherine Swann Scholarship
  • Ohio State University Scholarship
  • Donald H. and Verna S. Duncan Scholarship
  • PDK Emeritus Scholarship

Awards with Special Criteria

The PDK Educational Foundation oversees a group of undergraduate scholarships with special criteria that are available to students of various backgrounds and/or status. Application for these scholarships should be completed on the Prospective Educator Scholarship form. Please indicate special eligibility for any of these awards. They include:

Jimmie Elliott “Crystal Stair” Scholarship – Students who intend to teach, who have a demonstrated need, and who reside in the State of Alabama

The Marvin and Ruth Fellers/Des Moines Area IA Chapter 1038 Scholarship – Students at Grand View College who are entering student teaching

The Jim Frazier Memorial Scholarship – Students or employees of the Marion County, Florida, public schools who wish to become classroom teachers

Jo Ann Ota Fujioka Scholarship – Students of color pursuing education careers

Bessie Gabbard Scholarship – Preference to students from Florida or Ohio

Pauline B. Gough Memorial Scholarship – High school seniors entering college to study journalism or English who will teach

The Margaret L. Hanshaw and Family Scholarship – Students pursuing careers in music education, especially returning or non-traditional students interested in choral music

Lanny Holm Scholarship – Preference to students in the San Francisco Bay Area or the State of California

Kersey/Oglesby Scholarship – Preference to an elementary education major from the Midwest or the Southeast; preference to a male student

The Petermichel Family Endowed Scholarship – Preference to applicants who are members of one of the following Catholic parishes: St. Patrick’s, Cairo, Illinois; St. Pius X, Chula Vista, California; St. Vincent’s, Bedford, Indiana; St. John the Apostle, Bloomington, Indiana

Dave Sanders/Columbine High School Endowed Scholarship – Students from the State of Colorado who plan to major in education; preference given to students from Columbine High School, Littleton, Colorado

George J. and Jessie M. Schmalz Scholarship – Student with demonstrated need

The University of Texas/El Paso Chapter #0171 Scholarship – Students starting the internship at UTEP

The Donovan R. Walling Family Memorial Endowed Scholarship – High school senior and son or daughter of active or retired United States Army parent; must major in music or art with objective to teach

J. Arnold Webb Scholarship – Preference to a student attending an historically black college
