Guidelines for Submitting an Op-Ed
An op-ed piece not only generates media coverage for your issue but allows you to control the content. As long as you stay within the paper's guidelines for op-ed submissions, you are free to include exactly the information that you or your chapter wants the public to read.
To increase the likelihood that your op-ed will be published, you should:
- Keep it focused on one or two points
- Present your message clearly and concisely
- Try to connect it to a recent news story or an important local issue
For example, if the newspaper has recently published an article on the need to prepare students to compete globally, you can mention that story, tie it into the recent PDK/Gallup Poll findings on international education and then describe the policies and programs that you believe your schools should implement. If there is specific legislation that you support, or if there are upcoming events related to the cause you're writing about, be sure to you mention such important details as bill numbers, dates, and locations, so that people who share your views can get involved.
