Ms. Richardson,
I am working on my masters in teaching at the moment and researching professional learning communities and blogs this week relating to education.
I am not even close to having the experience/knowledge that you have but I do agree to the naivety you reference in your post.
It seems from the reading and research that I have been doing that it is not about the amount of money that you put into a school, it is the teachers that make the difference.
Maybe I am being naive? What do you think?
One example I have read about is Freeport Intermediate School in Texas that went from one of the lowest performing schools to a national model for academic achievement.
I am not sure of how this school can compare to the school that is focused on in the movie but Freeport is not serving affluent communities and from what I read they are making great strides in student achievement.
The information that I can find on the website is that this school has 590 students and 441 of the students receive free or reduced lunch.
It was not an easy task but the administration worked with the teachers to take a hard look at the data on student achievement and work together as a team to improve results instead of making excuses for them. Maybe more schools could use this school as a model?
I agree that educators do not show up to work wanting to give children a crappy education, however I think the only way changes will be made is through the administrators/teachers.
What can we do to get all Americans to care as much as teachers care?
