Region A Abstracts
Phoenix Arizona Chapter #1042 -- NJHS Induction and Teacher of the Year Award ($300)
The project will promote excellence in education and the community through the support of the National Junior Honor Society and publicly recognize outstanding service to the school and its students by awarding membership to PDK. The chapter will provide monetary support to the Underdown NJHS chapter for refreshments and decorations for its induction ceremony. The chapter will also provide a membership in PDK to a deserving teacher that has already been recognized by the students as one that is an example of quality teaching. This project will bring together two nationally recognized organizations that exemplify leadership and service and, in doing so, will encourage the development of leaders and service-minded individuals within the school.
Las Vegas Nevada #1113 – Using Drama to Promote Student Literacy ($850)
The project concept grew out of the established partnership between the Las Vegas Chapter of PDK and the Clark County School District in Las Vegas. The two organizations had previously formed an alliance with the establishment of the Arts Collective forging the talents of some of the leading Art in Education advocates. Through this project Humanities teachers will learn skills to involve students in a variety of drama/theater strategies in order to stage challenging moments found in classroom literature.
The project fulfills the PDK mission and includes the following outcomes: increased student achievement, successful collaboration and rapport with the educational community, implementing a successful Chapter Service and Leadership project, and an increase in recruitment for PDK Membership.
Sacramento California Chapter #1014 – PDK Treasures: An Oral History of Senior, Life, and Emeritus Members ($800)
The purpose of the project is to honor the chapter's history and the members who gave significant service to the chapter through the creation of a DVD based on conversations with the chapter's senior, life, and emeritus members. Project leaders also hope that the initiative will be continued in future years as an ongoing history of the chapter's service to public education. Project funds will be used to purchase a digital video camera and CD-RW tapes to create and preserve a DVD record of the educational careers of these members. The DVD will be used to encourage new membership, create awareness and provide information at chapter programs, and inform the public of the good work of PDK.
The Iditarod Teaching Adventure: An Experiential Professional Development Conference for Intern Teacher Education Students at San Diego State University-Imperial Valley Campus. ($900)
PDK Region A is supporting the participation of several intern teacher education students from San Diego State University-Imperial Valley Campus at the 2006 Iditarod Winter Teacher Conference in Anchorage, Alaska. Intern teachers will engage in professional development activities designed to use the historical event in standards-based instructional planning and student learning activities.
University of California/Berkeley #0011 – Recruiting New Teachers for PDK ($850)
New teacher candidates from four colleges will be invited to a PDK dinner meeting in their honor. The chapter will welcome the invitees to the teaching profession, network them with school districts, and recruit them for PDK student membership.
Yavapai Arizona Chapter #1385 – Recognition of Distinguished Educational Students ($300)
The project provides a vehicle to recognize exemplary students seeking undergraduate degrees and certifications in the field of education. The award application will include an essay component asking applicants to describe their educational philosophies specifically as related to multicultural issues. Matching funds will be provided by the chapter. |

Region B Abstracts
The Washington State #1599 – Teachers Recruiting and Teaching Future Teachers
The Washington State Chapter will co-sponsor with Washington State Teachers Recruiting Future Teachers (WSTRFT) Project whose mission is the “certification and re-certification training” of 170 high school teachers who teach in Washington State High Schools a Careers in Education Course using the WSTRFT Curriculum and Teacher's Manual. This project will fund the 2006 conference and educational academy entitled: Teachers Recruiting and Teaching Future Teachers.
District I/City University-Cascades #1583 – Send One, Get One ($2,000)
Chapter members in District I will be encouraged to attend two summer institutes being held on August 20 and 21 in Seattle, Washington. Chapter funds will be matched by district funds when two or more chapter members attend one or both of the institutes. Chapters will pay for one member to attend and will apply for matching financial support to reimburse a second attendee. Members must be in good-standing to qualify for grant support.
University of Nebraska/Omaha # 0116 – Extending Our Reach ($1,000)
The overall purpose of this project is to provide a conference experience for members of local FEA chapters thus encouraging them to become educators and to broaden their participation in FEA. Specifically, the project will extend the reach of the current MOEC FEA Conference beyond the Metropolitan Omaha schools to include schools in neighboring counties and throughout Nebraska. It is an effort to establish a statewide FEA Conference in Nebraska. |

Region C Abstracts
University of Houston-University Park Chapter #0074—Annual Research Symposium ($1000)
The purpose of the Annual Research Symposium is to promote the professional development of present and future educators. An atmosphere of collaboration is established through the join efforts of PDK chapters 0074, 1025 and 1435 and university organizations, primarily the Graduate Student Organization of the University of Houston-University Park. The outcomes include professional development, PDK membership involvement and recruitment, promotion of research in action and leadership training.
Texas A&M University-Commerce #0101—Education: Issues and Intrigue Workshop ($950)
University students and school administrators were invited to participate in the Education: Issues and Intrigue Workshop. Participants attended a keynote address and breakout sessions to learn instructional and administrative strategies to assist them in improving their job-related skills. A keynote address was followed by sessions on topics ranging from Educational Law and Understanding State Assessment to Qualities for Survival and Success in the Principalship and Efficacy in Supervisory Roles. The project goal is to inform and assist our members as well as recruit prospective members.
South Texas #1121 – Promoting Teaching as a Profession ($1000)
The project objective is to promote teaching as a profession. This will be accomplished by facilitating a professional dialogue between PDK members and students and by creating an atmosphere of collegiality that encourages students to major in education. A professional reading area will be created where PDK publications and other professional books will be available for education students and faculty to peruse. PDK members will serve as group leaders/presenters during discussions at PDK meetings and PDK will join with the College of Education and Kappa Delta Pi in planning a series of recruitment and enrichment activities for education majors. |

Region D Abstracts
PDK Member Sherry K. Hoover, Calumet, Michigan – Social Studies: Bridging Communities ($1,000)
CLK Elementary School second grade teacher, Sherry Hoover, will partner with second grade teachers in Kerava, Finland and North Pole, Alaska to provide a cultural exchange experience for students. Learning will be achieved through a variety of experiences that include art, music, writing, history, language, and teleconferencing. Students will make personal and curriculum connections by engaging in monthly pen pal experiences and exchanging artifacts, literature, and articles common in each culture. A grant has been written by Finnish teachers and university instructors to visit Sherry Hoover's second grade class in late spring. The goal of the project is to enable students to develop a broad perspective of other cultures and the ability to participate in a global world and economy as adults.
La Crosse Wisconsin #1081 – Technology-Bridge to the Future ($700)
The goal of the project is to expose Kappans to technology to use in their classrooms and to keep them updated with new technology. Kappans will have the opportunity to attend mini sessions at UW-La Crosse held on various nights to explore the topics of best practices in technology enhanced instruction. Kappans will be exposed to theories, approaches, and research on the topic. Kappans will explore technology through hands on experiences.
Northern Michigan University #0168 – PDK Excellence in Education Wristbands ($500)
The chapter will design and distribute PDK wristbands and project literature to recognize student and teacher success in academic leadership and service excellence. By doing so, the chapter hopes to increase PDK visibility, encourage best practices, and promote excellence in education. Project funds will be used to purchase and distribute the wristbands, which will carry the message, “Phi Delta Kappa Celebrates: Scholarship, Leadership, and Service.” Anticipated distribution throughout the 2006-07 academic year is to chapter members, student members at NMU, student teachers, Michigan Upper Peninsula Fall Educator's Conference, and FEA.
Kenosha-Lake-Racine #1123 – New Teacher Initiative: Changing Times and Changing Challenges of Beginning Teachers ($1000)
This initiative is to promote high quality education by supporting professional relationships and partnerships with our newest educators through innovative activities, relevant research, visionary leadership, and the dedicated service of Kappans in the chapter area. The project will provide workshops and coaching designed to help new teachers meet the challenges of the teaching profession effectively.
St. Joseph Missouri #1199 – Uzbekistan ($850)
The Phi Delta Kappa Chapter of St. Joseph Missouri has initiated and is sponsoring a teacher in Prospect Berdakh, Nukas, Uzbekistan. She is a teacher of English in her country. Her responsibilities include working with primary, intermediate, and secondary students, giving them some proficiency in the English language. The goal of the project is to further understanding and cooperation between the educational communities of St. Joseph, Missouri and the community of Berdakh in Uzbekistan. During the summer of 2003 a cadre of teachers from Uzbekistan visited in the Kansas City schools and the Phi Delta Kappa chapters in Kansas City and St. Joseph. The chapter hopes to gather together material which will be of value to the sponsored teachers and her students. Chapter members will contribute and/or purchase items; books, calculators, writing utensils, and other supplies necessary for student learning in a country and community where schools and students are strapped for funds. |

Region E Abstracts
Wright State University Chapter #1320 and University of Dayton Chapter #0158 – Kappans and CASA-GAL Volunteers Working Together on Behalf of Children ($1,000)
The project is designed to bring two PDK Chapters together with the Montgomery County Juvenile Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program. In this program, trained laymen advocate for abused and neglected children as Guardians ad Litem (GAL). Over the next two years, 8-12 Kappans will be trained as CASA-GAL volunteers. The project will address the need to inform educators of the role of the Guardian ad Litem and, at the same time, the need to educate CASA volunteers on how to work within the educational system as they advocate for child clients. The goal is to create a team approach through collaboration and cross-training that will better serve child clients.
Area Ec PDK Chapters – Today's Challenge: Tomorrow's Success ($500)
A series of four seminars for teachers and administrators, offering one graduate credit hour through Ashland University for attending all four seminars, is being coordinated by six of the Ec-Cleveland area chapters. The goal is to educate teachers on new changes being implemented regarding the value added model and AYP and to help teachers use this knowledge to implement differentiated instruction strategies within their classrooms through tips and real life examples of best practices. The topics, dates, and speakers are: Impact of Value added NCLB Growth Model, speaker from Battelle for Kids, 10/6/07; How Your School Measures Up—AYP, Cuyahoga County Education Services Center speaker, 10/23/07; Tips and Tools for Differentiated Instruction, education consultant Margaret Searle, 11/15/07; and, Educator's Sharing Effective Practices for Student Growth, member from each chapter will present a “best practice,” 2/9/08. The following PDK chapters in area Ec are sponsoring the series: Cleveland Ohio Inter-University; Cuyahoga Valley of Ohio; Kent State University; McKinley Ohio; North Coast Ohio; and, University of Akron.
Greater Cleveland Ohio Inter-University # 0090 – Applied Behavior Analysis Training (ABA) ($1000)
The workshop will provide the skills needed to facilitate socialization, communication, class participation, independence and daily living skills using Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) strategies.
Ashland University #1231 – "The Art of the Picture Book" Conference ($1,000)
The chapter and the College of Education at Ashland University will cosponsor a two-day conference for teachers to learn new information about how to use picture books in their classrooms. Teachers will have the opportunity to hear award-winning authors and illustrators give insights into their creative processes and to create their own projects for the classroom. Region F Abstracts
Murray State University #0180 – Writing and Publishing in Professional Journals ($1,000)
The purpose of the project is to sponsor a writing for professional publication workshop for Phi Delta Kappa members, faculty members in the College of Education, and faculty members from the other five colleges at Murray State University. The workshop will teach workshop participants how to hone their writing skills and help them prepare high quality manuscripts for submission to professional journals. In addition, techniques and strategies will be taught that will increase the success rate of manuscripts submitted to professional journals in the subject area of expertise. |

Region G Abstracts
CML Area Gf Chapters—Beginning FEA Chapters ($1000)
The focus of this project is to begin FEA chapters in local middle or high schools. Chapters in Area Gf will be given the opportunity to apply for one of four mini-grants of $250 each designed to start FEA chapters in their schools. The project is directed by the Area Gf CML. Grants will be awarded on a competitive basis and will highlight PDK's tenets of service, leadership, and service. Requests for proposals will be distributed through the area ALCs and correspondence with the chapter presidents. The submission deadline is June 15, 2007.
Pine Belt Area Chapter #0075—Young Authors Celebration ($1000)
Through this project the chapter will participate in the third Young Authors Celebration sponsored by the School of Education at William Carey University. Children and teachers in grades 1 through 8 are invited to work with student teachers from WCU writing and illustrating their own books. The books are published by the schools and the students and teachers are invited to the spring celebration of young authors. PDK's contribution helps to bring 14 regional authors and illustrators to the celebration. Upon completion, over 350 children will have created a book of their own, and 15 teachers will be trained in Writer's Workshop.
Kennesaw Mountain Georgia Chapter #1485 – FEA: Looking Ahead ($500)
The chapter will establish and support FEA chapters at South Cobb and McEachern High Schools in the Cobb County Georgia School District. PDK members will conduct leadership training for students and advisors, interact with the Teacher Apprentice Program, and serve as mentors and facilitators for the FEA programs.
Ge CML – Sustained Leadership ($500)
The project will focus on professional leadership activities designed to help chapters create and maintain sustained leadership at the chapter level. The goals are to create a core of collaborative leaders who support each other and fully understand and support the goals of PDK.
CML Area Ge Chapters—Enlarging the Winner's Circle ($1,000)
This project grant will provide four mini-grants with a maximum of $250 each to four chapters in Region Ge. The grants will focus on service, leadership, or professional development. Chapters which actively provide service and activities to chapter members will have the opportunity to apply for one of the grants. Chapter members will plan a project for teachers and/or students that will focus on one of the following:
- Service and leadership activities that create and support a new Future Educators Association chapter (FEA) or support an existing FEA chapter in a local high school within the service area;
- Service and leadership activities that implement a professional development learning opportunity on a current topic of interest to chapter members and other educators and offers the opportunity to earn Professional Learning Units;
- Service and leadership activities designed to enact a public forum on education; or
- Service and leadership activities that support the reactivation of Region Ge chapters that are currently inactive.
Mini Grants for Classroom Teachers ($1,000)
This project will benefit four of the active Gf chapters: Central Savannah River #1232; Savannah #1219; Coastal Georgia #1371; and Georgia Southern #0167. Each chapter will receive a $250.00 grant to present to an active member who is a classroom teacher. These grants will be awarded on a competitive basis and will focus on service, leadership, and/or service.
Requests for proposals will be distributed through chapter newsletters and announced at chapter meetings. Each chapter will have a committee to evaluate the proposals and make selections. The teachers will be expected to present their grant at a Phi Delta Kappa chapter meeting of their local chapter.
Broward County Florida #1327 – Encouraging Innovative Educational Practice ($1,000)
The purpose of this project is to distribute money throughout the schools in the Broward County area that will have a positive influence on teachers and students. Classroom teachers will submit grant applications to compete for four grants of $250 each. The projects will focus on service, leadership, or research and will have a positive impact on students in the area.
CML Area Gb – Minigrants for Classroom Teachers ($1,000)
This project grant will provide four minigrants of $250 each to teachers in four chapters in Region Gb. The grants will focus on service, leadership, or research. Phi Delta Kappa members who are teachers in schools served by the four chapters will have the opportunity to apply for one of the four $250 grants. Teachers will plan a project for their students that will focus on leadership, research, or service.
Requests for proposals will be distributed through chapter newsletters and announced at chapter meetings. The deadline to submit proposals will be May 1, 2006. Each chapter will have a committee to evaluate the proposals, and selections will be made by May 15, 2006. The deadline to complete the project will be December 15, 2006 and by that date the recipients must submit their evaluations to the project director. The teachers will be expected to present the project at a Phi Delta Kappa meeting of their local chapter.
Northwest Florida Chapter #1312 – Center for Integrating Technology in Education (CITE) ($1,000)
The Center for Integrating Technology in Education (CITE) is an innovative technology project in collaboration with the Brentwood Middle School/Program for Academically Talented Students that will provide a center where PDK members can help other members and non-members improve their ability to integrate technology as a tool for teaching and learning. This goal will be carried out through professional development, mentoring and independent study. This particular project will focus on training PDK members to incorporate the use of digital cameras in teaching and learning. Using digital cameras in the classroom will motivate students, enrich their learning and improve student performance in writing research. The project will also gather and produce a booklet of best teaching practices contributed by member and non-member project participants. Project results will be disseminated to PDK Chapters in the Panhandle of Florida and to potential target members. The project participants will earn in-service points. Non-members will be offered PDK membership by funding with local dues. |

Region H Abstracts
St. Lawrence Valley Chapter #1162 – International Literacy Project ($1,000)
The chapter is engaged in phase 4 of the international literacy project. In phases 1-3, the chapter sought to identify and implement a family based literacy program in the region. To date, 12 people have been trained as “Parents as Teachers” (PAT). They are working with over 60 families in the area and networking with community agencies to have handouts translated into French for parents. Other agencies are looking to come onboard to expand services and to reach out to additional families in need. A potential funding source for expansion has been identified. In phase 4 of the project, a project coordinator will network with relevant community agencies to meet the criteria of the potential funding source and to complete the funding application process.
University of Toronto #0085 – Global Connections: Looking Out to Join In ($1000)
As the kickoff for a year-long focus on “Globalization – Looking Out to Join In”, the University of Toronto Chapter will invite Professor Yong Zhao to come to Toronto. Professor Zhao will be asked to give one large formal session along with several informal ones on the importance of education looking at globalization and its implications for education. Professor Zhao also will meet with Kappans from beyond our own chapter, as well as, representatives from other Ontario educational organizations. The chapter will introduce him to some of the aspects of globalization embedded in the very multicultural nature of Toronto and will use his visit to develop partnerships, to strengthen present connections, and to build new ones.
Iberia Spain #1546- School Law ($750)
The main objective of the project was to update or familiarize teachers, administrators, and counselors with the current trends and practices relating to students' and teachers' rights. Topics covered civil rights and Constitutional rights of both students and teachers. Special discussions focused on rights of Americans living on foreign soil.
State University of New York/Albany #0135 – Opportunities for Education ($1,000)
The chapter's goals are to introduce graduate education students to Phi Delta Kappa and to provide hiring information. The success of the chapter's “Opportunities in Education” program proved the soundness of the model. The intent is to expand the base of graduate education students in the Opportunities in Education program. Service to graduate students provides a major foundation in both education and PDK International by bringing teachers in the developmental stage into the organization. We will both increase our membership and strengthen the roots of the organization. The target population includes graduate students from the University at Albany and Cortland State. Eventually, our goal would be to expand this program to other local colleges and universities.
London Ontario Chapter #1335 – Young Authors' Conference IV ($1,000)
The chapter will organize the fourth young authors' conference for grade 7 and 8 students to learn about the publishing process, create a new pieces of writing, and submit the writing for publication in a commemorative booklet. The goals of the project are to reinforce the elements of good writing, clear communication, and the storyteller's craft; to work with local school district educators to promote excellence in written communication; and to enhance the reputation of Phi Delta Kappa as a supporter of education excellence.
Area 6F – Professional Development for Current and Emerging Leaders ($1,000)
Area 6F of PDK is planning to present a seminar/workshop on Professional Development for Current and Emerging Leaders. The focus of the seminar/workshop will be Leadership: Navigating Change. The seminar will focus on the need for ongoing quality training and self-analysis in a supportive, professional environment that reduces tensions and hostilities. |
