Governance Structure

The governing body of the association is the International Board. Officers of the Board are elected by the professional membership of the association and consist of the president, president-elect, immediate past president, and regional representatives. Up to three at-large representatives may be appointed by the Board. The Board meets three times a year, generally January/February and June/July and October. Minutes of the meetings are posted on the website. Log in to our website to view the minutes.

The association is divided into nine geographic regions led by elected regional representatives. Each region has approximately the same number of members. Regions are reassessed and reapportioned every six years based on geographic factors and number and density of good-standing members. The next reassessment is in 2009. The regions are as follows:

Region A: Arizona, Australia, California, Guam, Hawaii, Japan, Korea, Nevada, New Mexico, the Philippines, Thailand, Utah, and addresses in the Pacific and continent of Asia.

Region B : Alaska, Alberta, British Columbia, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Manitoba, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Oregon, Saskatchewan, South Dakota, Washington, Wyoming and Yukon.

Region C: Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas

Region D: Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, and Wisconsin

Region E: Indiana, Ohio, and West Virginia

Region F: District of Columbia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia

Region G: Alabama, the Caribbean, Central America, Florida, Georgia, Mexico, Mississippi, and South America

Region H: Africa, Bermuda, Connecticut, Europe, Maine, Massachusetts, Middle East, New Brunswick, New Hampshire, Newfoundland/Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Rhode Island, Vermont, New York (except addresses west of a north-south line from Rochester to Binghamton).

Region I: Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York addresses west of a north-south line from Rochester to Binghamton.

Regions are composed of chapters and elected officers who act to further the mission of the association. Chapters are college, university, and community based and offer meetings, newsletters, social events, and other services that keep members current on the local issues in education.

A network of elected chapter/member liaisons serve as the communication and support link between regional representatives, chapter officers, and members. The number of chapter/member liaisons that are necessary to support the region is determined by the regional representative.
