The Lorin and Susan Waitkus Endowed Scholarship will be awarded annually to students working toward a master of arts (M.A.) in mathematics, science and/or technology in the College of Education and Human Ecology at The Ohio State University. The recipients must intend to teach in public schools.
Dr. Lorin V. Waitkus received his undergraduate degrees in technology and mathematics from California University of Pennsylvania and his graduate degrees from
Pennsylvania
State University and The Ohio State University. He was promoted to full professor and became Dean of Engineering and Industrial Technology at Cuyahoga Community College.
During Dr. Waitkus' years of teaching in public schools, his students in junior and senior high school won many highly competitive awards in craftsmanship. Engineering students on the college level won multiple awards in CAD and engineering designs. Moreover, while at Cuyahoga Community College, he was the founder and advisor of a student chapter of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the founder and advisor of Gamma Upsilon Chapter of Tau Alpha Pi, an honor society for engineering technology students.
During his career as an educator he was awarded the Laureate Citation by Epsilon Pi Tau, Teacher of the Year by the North East Ohio Industrial Arts Association, the Ohio Superior Teacher of the Year, Educator of the Year by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and was nominated as CASE Professor of the Year by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. More recently he received the Career Teacher Award from The Ohio State College of Education Alumni Society, the Meritorious Achievement Award from the Alumni Association of California University and the SME President's Circle.
