Donovan R. Walling Family Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Walling Family Scholarship is awarded to the children of currently serving or retired U.S. Army families who are pursuing careers in music or art and education. The recipient is selected by the PDK International scholarship selection committee from applications received through the prospective educator scholarship program.
Donovan R. Walling created this fund in memory of his wife, Diana Lynn Eveland Walling (1948-1991), and his parents, Sergeant major Donovan Ernest Walling (1925-1997) and Dorothy Jane Goyette Walling (1925-1985). The donor, is an educator, a 30 plus-year member of Phi Delta Kappa, and the former director of publications at PDK. |

| Diana Lynn Eveland was born in Frankfort, Germany, into a U.S. military family. Like most military children, Diana grew up in a variety of settings, both in the United States and abroad. She met Donovan R. when they were brought together at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, and the two became high school sweethearts. They were married in Emporia, Kansas, in 1968. After Donovan graduated from college in 1970, the couple moved to Sheboygan, Wisconsin, where their three children were born: Katherine Anne in 1970, Donovan David in 1976, and Alexander James in 1987. Diana was active in community music and sang in the Lakeshore Chorale. She also was active in her church. Diana died at age 43 in 1991, two weeks after the family moved to Carmel, Indiana. |
Parents Dorothy Jane (nee Goyette) and Donovan Ernest Walling grew up in various towns in Kansas and Missouri as their families struggled through the Great Depression. However, the 1940s found them living in the same town, and they became high school sweethearts. After graduation, Donovan joined the U.S. Navy and was sent to the Pacific during the closing months of World War II. On his return, he and Dorothy were married. When Donovan returned to military service, it was in the U.S. Army, to which he gave more than 20 years of service.
Dorothy and Donovan retired in Moran, Kansas, in the 1970s. Dorothy was active in the community, in particular working with the local library. Donovan used his military medical training as a volunteer emergency medical technician, and he served as a town judge.
