Contact the advertising director for acceptability, mechanical requirements, quantity, size, and closing dates of advertiser-supplied BRCs. Advertiser is responsible for conforming to second-class postal regulations on advertiser-supplied inserts and mechanicals. BRCs do not contribute toward frequency discounts. Minimum one page supporting space required.
Mechanical specifications: Head-for-guide, minimum 1/4" bindery lap low-folio. Cards insert low-folio with minimum 3-1/2" flap high-folio. If insert is to jog, allow 1/8" trim at the head. Supply BRC inserts folded; ship directly to printer, not to publishing/advertising offices. Contact advertising director for shipping instructions. |

| MECHANICAL REQUIREMENTS |
SWOP standards apply.
Prepress: Direct-to-Plate. Printing: Cover and body printed by web offset.
Publication trim size: 7-7/8" x 10-7/8". Number of columns: 2 or 3.
Bleed: 3/16" trim margin required. Keep live matter 12" from top, gutter, and side; 3/4" from bottom. Supply separate proof ruled to final trim size to position on page. Page bleed size: (7-7/8" + 3-1/6" right and/or left trim margin) x (11-1/4"); spread bleed size: 16-1/8" x 11-1/4".
Standard page size (image area): 7" wide, 9-3/8" deep.
Saddle-stitched binding.
Screens and halftones: 133 lines preferred for all material; 133 lines required for 4-color process ads.
Preferred materials: Electronic files in Macintosh format, QuarkXPress preferred. PC/Pagemaker format acceptable. Submit art/photos as TIFF, EPS, or JPEG files at 300 dpi. Include all screen and printer fonts (Postscript Type 1 fonts preferred). Send on Macintosh-formatted CD or via e-mail to: cbucheri@pdkintl.org. (To e-mail please create a folder with the client's name and place all ad materials in the folder, including art files and fonts. Compress the folder with "Drop Stuff" or similar MAC-based program. E-mail the compressed file.) All electronic files must be accompanied by an insertion order and print proof. Electronic files will be output via an RIP process at 2400 dpi, 133-line screen. Please submit a good-quality black-and-white proof with each negative. Color proofs should be generated through a raster image processor for highest quality. We cannot be responsible for matching image, fonts, or color unless a high-quality color proof is provided. NOT acceptable: film negatives.
IMPORTANT NOTE: All files, including pdfs and embedded EPS files, must be built as CMYK. Include all embedded EPS images and all fonts embedded in EPS files. We cannot be responsible for the quality of reproduction of materials submitted with missing embedded files or incorrectly built files. Please call for production assistance if you have questions.
Additional information: Two-color. Density of tone: maximum 180%; second color not to exceed 80%. Four-color process. Density of tone: maximum 300%.
Rotation of colors: black, cyan, magenta, yellow.
Text paper: GW #5, 40 lb. coated. Cover paper: GW #3, 80 lb. coated.
Photocopies and laser prints at less than 300 dpi resolution are not acceptable. Materials of unacceptable quality will be reset and billed to the advertiser at $35 per hour.

| TERMS AND DISCOUNTS |
Agency Commission: 15% to accredited agencies only if paid within 30 days from invoice date. Agency is fully responsible for all advertising ordered and published. In the event of nonpayment, publisher reserves the right to hold advertiser and/or its agency jointly and severally liable for such monies as are due and payable to publisher.
Nonprofit Discount: 15% to institutions and associations holding nonprofit status. Submit official purchase order listing Federal Tax Exempt I.D. number. (Either agency or nonprofit discount may be taken, not both.)
Terms: Net 30 days. Five percent discount if paid on or prior to final closing date. Balances due over 60 days are subject to a 2% per month service charge.
Cancellation of space reservation cannot be accepted after closing date. Failure to notify will result in full cost of insertion. Cancellation before closing date must be made in writing.
First-time advertisers must pay in advance to establish credit. There is a 5% net discount for advertising paid by the closing date.
With general rate increases, advertisers are protected for the duration of existing contracts within two months from effective date of increase.
The Phi Delta Kappan is the professional journal of Phi Delta Kappa and, as such, publishes advertising to provide information to its readers and members. The editors reserve the right to limit the placement of advertising within the editorial well of the journal. Advertising must be typeset and tastefully laid out.
The publisher reserves the right to exclude any advertisement that does not conform to the standards of the publication. Kappan advertisers and their agencies, when placing an ad in the Kappan, take full responsibility for the content of their ad and agree to hold Phi Delta Kappa International harmless against any damages, costs, and expenses incurred in defending or compromising any claim or action arising by reason of claim by a third party based on an allegation that any portions of that ad constitute a copyright violation or that any portions are inaccurate, misleading, or defamatory in nature or constitute an invasion of privacy. The publisher will not be bound by conditions, printed or otherwise, which appear on contracts, insertion orders, copy instructions, etc., that conflict with the policies of Phi Delta Kappa International, Inc. The publisher may insert the word "advertisement" prominently into any advertisement which simulates editorial content.

The Kappan has won numerous awards for both its editorial content and its illustrations, including citations from Print and the Art Directors Annual. Both The New Yorker and the Christian Science Monitor have called the Kappan "one of the most prestigious of the education journals."

Phi Delta Kappa is a professional organization for leaders in education established in 1906. The organization aims at promotion and improvement of publicly supported education through a continuing interpretation of the ideals of research, service, and leadership. These goals are pursued through active programs sponsored by more than 650 local chapters.
