CARTOONIST GUIDELINES Phi Delta Kappan is a journal for professional educators -- school superintendents, teachers, school board members, state and federal education department staff. The journal has been published since 1915; our current circulation is about 48,000. We prefer to receive original cartoons in print format so that all of our editors and designers can easily review them. Please include an SASE of sufficient size and with sufficient postage to return your work. We recommend submitting 8 to 20 cartoons in a packet. If you choose to submit copies rather than originals, please send the original immediately when we notify you that we will be purchasing the work. Also, please note any cartoonist guild or association memberships you hold. Be sure that your name, address, and phone are on the back of each cartoon, and that your artwork is signed. Cartoonists retain copyright to any cartoons that we publish. Reprint requests will be forwarded. Please be sure that we have your current contact information. Cartoons must deal with some aspect of the issues in education to be considered for purchase. (Editorial cartoons should deal with issues that will continue to be newsworthy for a few months.) Further, we would like to remind everyone that we would prefer to choose from (and are more likely to purchase) cartoons that feature diverse people in a variety of roles. Remember -- not all troublemakers are boys -- not all principals are men -- not all elementary teachers are women -- not all people are white -- not all elementary teachers who are women are mean -- and just once in a great while -- could the cat beat the dog to the homework ? (We haven't heard from the cat lobby yet, but I'm expecting a letter any day.) We've had the great good fortune to work with many terrific cartoonists over the years. They have always provided the most enjoyable moments of our days. We welcome you to join their ranks, but please understand that the competition is pretty fierce -- we review many hundreds of cartoons every month and can publish only a tiny fraction of them.
