ILLUSTRATOR GUIDELINES Phi Delta Kappan is a journal for professional educators -- school superintendents, teachers, school board members, state and federal education department staff. The journal has been published since 1915; our current circulation is about 48,000. Note that at this time only a few articles each year are illustrated on an assignment basis. Artists are selected to receive assignments based on the samples they submit to us and their previous experience as professional illustrators. Most of the illustrations we require are color. Many types of media are appropriate -- pencil, graphite, acrylic, gouache, wash, ink, paper collage, construction -- but most illustrations are now submitted as digital art and are sent on CD or via e-mail. Illustrators are expected to work from the original manuscript, concept notes, or the design director's sketches to come up with rough or thumbnail sketches to show a choice of concepts and compositions. These may then be selected, refined, or altered by the editors or design director. Further, we would like to remind everyone that we would prefer to choose from (and are more likely to approve) illustrations that feature diverse people in a variety of roles. Remember -- not all elementary teachers are women - not all people are white - not all school administrators are men -- and school children reflect our nation's history as the melting pot of the world. To be considered for freelance assignments, please send printed samples (or e-mails) of your work that can be kept on file. Be sure to include samples of both color and black and white work. Generally three to ten samples are acceptable. Please label each sample with your name, address, and telephone number. If the sample was published, please include the name and date of the publication and any information you wish to include about the nature of the assignment. We pay on acceptance of the final art and receipt of invoice. Payment is for one-time use. The artist retains copyright. Original art is returned to the artist after publication and any reprint requests are forwarded. We provide a number of tearsheets (usually about 90) of the printed piece. We do not pay for incomplete or unacceptable work. The general time frame for assignments is two to three weeks from the assignment to the final deadline. Address samples to: Design Director, Phi Delta Kappan, 408 N. Union St., Bloomington, Indiana 47408. Or send samples via e-mail (or your portfolio web address) to Design Director. Please do not send original work or telephone with inquiries. |
