PHOTOGRAPHERS' GUIDELINES

Phi Delta Kappan is a journal for professional educators -- school superintendents, teachers, school board members, and state and federal education department staff. The journal has been published since 1915; our current circulation is about 48,000. The journal is published 10 times per year, monthly September through June.

The Kappan is devoted to the unbiased reporting of current issues in the field of education. Frequently covered topics include federal policy toward education, early childhood education, educational technology, urban and rural schools, and teacher education.

We occassionally use color photographs on the cover and black and white photos within the body of the magazine. We do not pay research fees and we rarely have assignments. We are most interested in looking at stock photos depicting a variety of school situations. Some subjects that we would like to see include racially and ethnically diverse students in classrooms or engaged in educational projects and groups of teachers and administrators interacting with one another and/or with children.

We prefer to review work on your website. If you wish to send us original prints, please include an SASE of sufficient size and with sufficient postage to return your work. We recommend submitting 8 to 20 photos in a packet. We cannot be responsible for the loss of unsolicited work. Be sure that your name, address, and phone are on the back of each print. Photograhers retain copyright to any photos that we publish. Reprint requests will be forwarded. Please be sure that we have your current contact information.

Photographs must deal with some aspect of education to be considered for publication.

We would like to emphasize that we would prefer to choose from (and are more likely to purchase) work that features diverse people in a variety of roles. Remember -- not all principals are men -- not all elementary teachers are women -- not all people are white. And adults in schools do occassionally interact with one another instead of with children. We also cover some topics that work best with people turned away from the camera or in shadow.

We've had the great good fortune to work with many terrific photographers over the years. We welcome you to join their ranks, but please understand that the competition is pretty fierce -- we use relatively few photographs and can publish only a tiny fraction of those that we like.
