FAQ: ONLINE ACCESS INFORMATION FOR LIBRARY SUBSCRIBERS

What is the method of authentication for online access for library subscribers? (e.g.: ID & Password, IP Address)
Library subscribers must register online with their subscriber ID number and a password they create, and then log in. (On return visits simply log in with the ID number and password.) Libraries may set up one patron computer per subscripion that has automatic User ID and password information saved as a browser preference.

Note: When registering enter the subscriber number (without the initial "K") and password of choice. Then log in with the subscriber number (with the initial K) and password. On return visits, log in with the subscriber number (with the initial K) and the password. Access online registration.

Lots of institutions use a proxy server to network their environment. If some of their sites under one proxy server want your online journal, do you allow them to register the IP address of the proxy server?
We are in the process of developing this service. If you would like to be a test site please contact Amy Kemp at akemp@pdkintl.org.

How many users or library patrons may access the secure site at the same time?
At this time, only one per subscription. The online version of the journal is available only to members and print subscribers.

Why can't I find the July or August issue?
The Kappan is published monthly, September through June. It is not published in July or August.

How can I find information about the annual PDK/Gallup Poll?
PDFs of the current and all previous PDK/Gallup Polls are available to the general public at http://www.pdkintl.org/kappan/kpollpdf.htm. We are currently developing an archive of poll questions and responses that integrates all of the polls. This is available only to members and subscribers. To access it you simply log-in and click on the appropriate link on the welcome page.

Do you request that subscribers view or sign a license agreement?
No, not at this time.

Do you request library subscribers to register or activate their online access by themselves on your website?
Yes (see instructions above). New subscribers are given subscriber identification numbers. These numbers arrive electronically (if the subscription is purchased online) or by regular mail. After registering using these numbers, subscribers can then log in to the site and access electronic publications. The number is also printed as the first line of the address on the mailing label of each issue of the magazine.

Can libraries subscribe to the online version only?
Not at this time. We are considering offering this option to non-U.S. libraries and institutions.

Can we purchase a subscription online?
Yes. For information about subscribing online, go to http://www.pdkintl.org/kappan/khpsubsc/ksubinst.htm.

Can we renew our subscription online?
Yes. Follow the instructions for subscribing (at http://www.pdkintl.org/kappan/khpsubsc/ksubinst.htm). As you complete the online purchase be sure to enter in the "note" field that you are renewing and enter your ID (K) number if you know it. If you do not know the number, simply indicate that you are renewing.

In which format are current and past articles available? (e.g.: HTML, PDF)
Since September 2005 the format is pdf. Copies of earlier articles are available in a mix of pdf and text. A number of articles are also available in html format free to all visitors to our site. You do not need to log in to access these free articles, which are listed at http://www.pdkintl.org/kappan/khome/karticle.htm.

Is access to back issues included with subscriptions?
Yes, it is included for those back issues available online. Full text of all back issues is not available because of copyright issues. Since September 2005 full text has been available. Articles are available through our publication archives and may be searched for by title, author, date, or keyword. A link to the full-text version of the article (if available) appears if the user has logged in. Non-subscribers may purchase these articles.

If we discontinue our subscription to the journal, will we still have online access to the years for which we did subscribe?
No. Access is terminated when the subscription expires. Renewing the subscription will reinstate access to all previous issues.
