Advertorial in Education Week, June 21, 2006

Dear Educators,

Please accept this special invitation to attend the Phi Delta Kappa International Summit on Public Education, which will be held at the Capital Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C., 19-21 October 2006. The theme is “NCLB: Making It Work by Making It Better.”

This summit will be a powerhouse event! On the first day John Merrow, who anchors “The Merrow Report” on PBS, will moderate a high-profile panel to tackle questions about what we have learned from experience with the No Child Left Behind law to date and what should be changed for NCLB 2007. Scheduled panelists include:

Michael Casserly, Executive Director, Council of the Great City Schools
Virginia McLaughlin, Dean, School of Education, College of William and Mary
Bill Sanders, Senior Research Fellow, University of North Carolina
Wendy Puriefoy, President, Public Education Network
Sandy Kress, Partner, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer and Feld, LLP
Susan Gendron, Commissioner of Education, Maine

The next day John I. Goodlad, president of the Institute for Educational Inquiry and author of the PDK classic, What Schools Are For, will present the keynote address. Following the keynote, there will be time to continue the dialogue and to meet Goodlad and Merrow.

Breakout sessions over the three-day conference will further develop the summit theme. And there will be international dialogues about preparing the next generation of educators, inspiring visionary leadership, and sustaining public schools to ensure a democratic way of life.

Friday evening the summit will take a break with political satire by the well-known improvisational comedy troupe, Capitol Steps. The summit will conclude on Saturday evening with a gala dinner and dance commemorating PDK’s first 100 years and ushering in the association’s second century. Make plans now to attend this not-to-be-missed event. More information can be found online at www.pdkintl.org. Register today!

We look forward to seeing you in Washington, D.C., this fall.

Sincerely,

Jo Ann Fujioka
