As children enter classrooms with diverse language experiences, how can educators create classroom communities that build on students' cultural and linguistic resources while supporting their growth and development as English language learners? How can we connect language learning with critical literacy practices so that children not only learn language but also find their voice in the classroom?
While these are complex issues lacking simplistic solutions, this workshop offers frameworks for looking at language learning, shares strategies to invite students into valuable literacy opportunities, and explores ways in which those opportunities are linked to engagement and who students become as learners.
This workshop will provide conditions for supporting language learners, as well as frameworks, strategies, and resources that can better inform interactions with multilingual students as readers, writers, and literate people. |
