Assessment For Learning

All of our training opportunities are site-specific. That is, the content is tailored to the expressed needs of the participants, and it is delivered to your site.

AUDIENCE:   All educators

DESCRIPTION:

This one-day seminar will describe the concept of Assessment FOR Learning and how it contrasts to Assessment OF Learning. Particular attention will be given to how teachers and administrators use both types of assessments. Assessment FOR Learning, or formative classroom assessment, has been well documented as a means to improve student achievement (Black and Wiliam, 1998). This seminar will explore the ways formative classroom assessment strategies can turn the assessment experiences of students into learning experiences by engaging them in their own assessments. Key indicators of sound classroom assessment practice will be discussed.

This seminar will use a variety of instructional methods, such as lecture, video clips, readings, and group discussion.

At the conclusion of this seminar, participants will understand:

  • The distinction and usefulness of Assessment For and Of Learning.
  • What constitutes sound formative classroom assessment.
  • Various assessment purposes, assessment targets and assessment methods.
  • How to engage students in assessment development, recording keeping and communication of assessments.

Our Mission:
We know, we believe, and we support that professional development is an intentional process, that it is ongoing, and that it is systemic. We know that it must be integrated within school improvement planning and it must focus on student improvement. It must be based on well-documented research, and it must be tailored to the needs of the participants and delivered to them at their site.
