Modifying the Curriculum for At-Risk and Exceptional Learners

DESCRIPTION:  

This comprehensive workshop is designed to help educators and administrators become familiar with the needs of at-risk and exceptional learners in the regular education environment. Participants will learn to identify the characteristics of students with special needs, and the importance of placing the individual before the disability. Emphasis will be placed on providing participants with the ability to make on-the-spot modifications.

Key elements of this training include:

  • Discussion of special education categories under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
  • Strategies for providing access to textbooks for all learners
  • Reviewing the curriculum across all subject areas to determine necessary modifications
  • Strategies for adapting instruction for all students
  • Increasing motivation in every student
  • Practical strategies for increasing memory, retention, and comprehension
  • How to increase achievement and keep learning fun and interactive
  • Using graphic organizers to encourage mastery learning
  • Minimizing behavioral distractions through effective classroom management
