Literature as a Tool to Teach Principles of Government

All of our training opportunities are site-specific. That is, the content is tailored to the expressed needs of the participants, and it is delivered to your site.

AUDIENCE:   Educators serving grades 3 - 12; Media Specialists; Administrators

DESCRIPTION:

Children's literature can be a useful tool in conveying to students an understanding of citizenship and the political process. Throughout this one-day session, current and popular children's literature will be used as a backdrop to discuss key principles of government.

Concepts such as community, leadership, freedom of expression, bureaucracy, constitutionalism, and democracy will be illustrated using all five books of the Harry Potter series. Other popular children's literature will also be discussed.

State standards for social studies and English will also be examined. Participants will have an opportunity to apply the ideas discussed to their own project.

Our Mission:
We know, we believe, and we support that professional development is an intentional process, that it is ongoing, and that it is systemic. We know that it must be integrated within school improvement planning and it must focus on student improvement. It must be based on well-documented research, and it must be tailored to the needs of the participants and delivered to them at their site.
