Children's literature can be a useful tool in conveying to students an understanding of citizenship and the political process. Throughout this one-day session, current and popular children's literature will be used as a backdrop to discuss key principles of government.
Concepts such as community, leadership, freedom of expression, bureaucracy, constitutionalism, and democracy will be illustrated using all five books of the Harry Potter series. Other popular children's literature will also be discussed.
State standards for social studies and English will also be examined. Participants will have an opportunity to apply the ideas discussed to their own project. |
