Meeting the Needs of the Gifted Student

All of our training opportunities are site-specific. That is, the content is tailored to the expressed needs of the participants, and it is delivered to your site.

AUDIENCE:   All educators serving students grades 1 - 6

DESCRIPTION:

This one-day training opportunity focuses on the development of the elementary-aged gifted student.

Participants will understand the overall perspective on gifted education focusing on the needs and concerns of both the gifted student and his or her parent, identification methods, and common interventions.

The main thrust of the training will be on strategies for teaching the gifted student in the regular classroom. Emphasis will be given to the challenges gifted students face, the special needs of underserved populations (bilingual, handicapped, multicultural, etc.), contract learning, compacting, clustering, and independent projects.

The training will conclude with strategies for meeting the artistic needs of the gifted student. The importance of the visual and performing arts, integration of the arts into the curriculum, and strategies to promote creative responses to the visual and performing arts will be discussed.

We know that it must be integrated within school improvement planning and it must focus on student improvement. It must be based on well-documented research, and it must be tailored to the needs of the participants and delivered to them at their site.
