Summit on Global Education -- October 18-20

2007 Summit on Global Education

The Westin Bayshore in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, welcomed educators from around the world to PDK International's Summit on Global Education, October 18-20, 2007. Summit activities engaged attendees and provided much food for thought. How should schools educate students so they will be successful in the 21st century? What does global education mean? What roles should curriculum, competitiveness, creativity, and language play in educating students for this new world?

The summit kicked off Thursday afternoon with a panel discussion on educating our students for work and citizenship in a global society, moderated by the Honorable Lloyd Axworthy. A PDK leaders meeting followed the panel discussion. The evening welcome reception provided a pleasant setting to greet PDK members who faithfully attend every summit, as well as providing the opportunity to network with other groups of attendees, including the Vancouver host committee and PDK's emerging leaders and past presidents.

On Friday morning, keynoter Gene Sperling spoke about the importance of universal education and the work he's done to improve access to education for all children in developing counties. Lloyd Axworthy's summary of Thursday's panel discussion provided an excellent segue to the featured speakers' presentations. A recognition luncheon highlighting many Kappans' contributions was followed by facilitated roundtable discussions centered on global education. A summary of the panel and roundtable discussions will appear in the January 2008 Phi Delta Kappan. Breakout sessions throughout the rest of the afternoon allowed attendees to delve more deeply into various issues related to global education.

Saturday morning began with a report on the major findings of the 39th Annual Phi Delta Kappa/Gallup Poll detailing what the general public knows and believes about the nation's schools and providing information about trends that are revealed as time goes by. The seawall around Stanley Park was a natural setting for the fourth annual PDK International Walk for Education. Afternoon breakout sessions offered opportunities for attendees to continue the discussion on global education. The summit closed with a reception and a performance by the Vancouver-based improvisational comedy group, Rock.Paper.Scissors.

From Thursday afternoon's panel discussion through Saturday evening's closing events, PDK International's Summit on Global Education engaged attendees and provided them with opportunities to share best practices and brainstorm new strategies for educating students in the 21st century.
