On Saturday 23/Sep/06, the St. Lawrence Valley Chapter #1162 of Phi Delta Kappa International held its second annual Walk for Education. The walk involved a total of 22 participants representing the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation, Canada and the United States. Reflecting the truly international composition of the St. Lawrence Valley Chapter, the walk consisted of three distinct legs (no pun intended). Six Canadian walkers crossed the north span of the Seaway International Bridge from Cornwall Ontario to Cornwall Island, twelve US walkers crossed the south span of the bridge from Massena New York to Cornwall Island while four Akwesasne Mohawk walkers traversed Cornwall Island. All three groups met in the cold rain at the Peace Tree Mall to celebrate the accomplishment and the on-going commitment to education that is symbolized by the walk. This small but hardy group of walkers raised $1218 dollars with the local share being designated to fund a total of three scholarships, one to prospective educators in each of the member nations. University of Toronto Chapter PDK International recently held its second Walk for Education. Under the able leadership of Walk co-Chairs Shelley Thomas and Moveta Nanton, funds were raised for our new FEA Chapter "Northern Horizons" and Chapter awards and scholarships. The banner, which helped draw attention to the Walk, was created by Fred Georgopolous and carried by his twin brothers Joshua and Joseph. We were delighted that Toronto's Mayor, David Miller, joined us, and talked about his support for public education and his mother's experiences teaching in three countries. Television coverage included an interview with John Myers of the Education Faculty on educational issues. October 6, 2006
Southwest Florida Chapter 1152 in partnership with Florida Gulf Coast University recently held the Second Annual Walk for Education on the FGCU campus. Under the capable leadership of Joseph Cofield and Michelle Pescatrice, this project raised funds for the chapter's scholarship program as well as the FGCU College of Education's financial assistance fund and the PDK Educational Foundation. Kappans and other educators from Lee and Collier counties, university faculty members, and community members joined future teachers from the high school and college levels for the two-mile walk on a “Walt Disney” kind of day – bright sunshine, azure skies, a cooling breeze and no biting insects! At the end of the trail, walkers were treated to a snack of Florida fresh fruit, a massage (donated by a team of massage therapists in support of the walk), and a raffle of items from area merchants. What a great way to start a Saturday! Walkers agreed that they can't wait to do it again next year! Susan Shoemaker, President October 20, 2006
On Friday, October 20, the Teacher Academy class at the Delaware Area Career Center sponsored a Walk for Education. We were finding that Saturday's were a hard day to get people to come to the walk, so we hosted the walk on a Friday. Students from the Academy as well as 15 teachers from the Career Center braved a cold, blustery day to walk a mile for education. The teachers did not have classes that day because it was a union work day and everyone was either at union meetings or in their classrooms working. The walk was held in conjunction with our school-sponsored Health Fair. The future teachers from the Academy walked with the experienced teachers from the Career Center. Students shared their dreams and goals for after graduation and a great time was had by all. One extra treat—the walkers were all treated to a subs and hot soup lunch immediately following the walk. Everyone has asked that this become an annual event. October 21, 2006
The 2006 Summit Walk for Education was huge success. Nearly 150 walkers strolled down the streets of Washington, D.C. on Saturday, October 21 during the 2006 Annual PDK Summit on Public Education. Although final donations to the PDK Foundation, the beneficiary of the fund-raising event, are not due until December 1, our preliminary tally of monies received on site reached nearly $4000. Of particular excitement was the presence of two local FEA clubs: Seneca Valley High School and Walt Whitman High School. The opportunity to unite attendees representing administrators, teachers, higher education faculty, and even educational consultants with these students who intend to become the next generation of educators was tremendous. We look for this annual Summit event to continue to grow and expand in the years to come. Thank you, Walkers, for making the 2006 Summit event a wonderful experience. October 21, 2006
On 10/21, members of the Bedford (IN) chapter of Altrusa joined PDK members around the world in the Walk for Education. It was a very cool, brisk morning but the sunshine, good friends and knowing that we were helping raise funds to promote education made it a very exhilarating day. This was our first year to participate and we can't wait to ‘Walk' again next year! Becky Bailey October 21, 2006

Twelve FEA members, advisors, parents and Principal Kim Zupec of the St. Charles North Future Educators Association (FEA) walked in the third-annual Phi Delta Kappa (PDK) International Walk for Education on Saturday, October 28, 2006 at Waubonsie Valley High School. The event raised money for local, nonprofit educational organizations named by the various teams of walkers, and for the PDK Educational Foundation. Phi Delta Kappa is an international association for professional educators dedicated to promoting quality education by providing innovative programs, relevant research, visionary leadership, and dedicated service, according to the organization's website. Sixty percent of each team's proceeds will go to the local organization and 40 percent will benefit programs through the PDK Educational Foundation and help defray the cost of the event.
